NEW!!! Watch the videos in the following links to see where the Poisson distribution comes from:
For a random variable with a Poisson distribution, both the mean and the variance are equal to lambda. Note that this property is specific to the Poisson distribution and that it cannot be generalized to other distributions.

*** Announcements ***
Midterm 1 grades are posted on my office door (#281).
- Midterm 1 will be on Thursday, October 5, 2017, during lecture time, in the lecture hall (Amfi 3).
In Midterm 1, students will be responsible from all material that is covered in class up to (and including) Thursday, Sept 28.
Each student will need own pencil and eraser. Exchange of stationery will not be allowed during the exam.
Cell phones must be turned off during the exam.
No calculators or formula sheets will be allowed.
The exam will contain classical type questions as well as multiple choice and True-False type questions. Points may be reduced for false answers; therefore, leaving the questions unanswered may be a better strategy if the student does not know the answer.
- Midterm 2 will be on Thursday, November 9, 2017, during lecture time, in the lecture hall (Amfi 3).
Quiz 1 is due September 18. Please submit your answers during the lecture.
